Journal Entry: Fri Jul 3, 2009, 6:18 PM

If you're not familar with my lovebird Bicki, here's a photo of him:

And here are the tricks he can do:

So yeah, that's my Bicki. Just recently I got some finger bicycles from Hong Kong!

Bicycle

They are the perfect size for Bicki. I'm looking really forward to teaching him how to ride a bike! He's done everything so far, this shouldn't be that bad. I've searched up on youtube and there are many birds who can ride a bike! I haven't seen a lovebird though. All the other birds that can ride bikes are those big birds like macaws etc. I hope Bicki is the first. :P I wanna prove size isn't a factor. :P

So yeah, anyway, how on earth am I going to teach Bicki to ride a bicycle?

First of all I seperated all the pieces of the bike so I could get to the pedals (now it's a unicycle):

Bike in pieces

I tried teaching Bicki to place his feet on the pedals but it's extremely hard. >.< He doesn't like people touching his feet lol :P so we can't force them there. I've kept trying so that at least on one attempt he does it correctly then I can praise him but that hasn't happened so far. >.>

If you guys have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!

No idea how I'm gonna teach him

I couldn't even get my cockatiels to come out of their cage, so I don't think I'll be much help here XD but I wish you good luck. ^-^

Wow Bicki does some nice tricks :o

Do you have any tips for teaching them the wave, ball, etc? I have two parrotlets. One is okay with strange things, but the other is scared to death of everything =/

As for the bike, I have no idea xD Maybe you could stabilize the unicycle part to something so it doesn't move and let him investigate it. And then when he does the right thing give him his treat(of course xD)

You first would need to make some sort of training wheels or something to keep it from falling over, the little guy is about the same size as my parrotlet and they cant balance them, but they can make them go

try moving the petals while his feet are on them and rewarding him. or move the bike forward so the petals move and reward him, especially if his feet move with them.

Well I'm thinking that you need to add training wheels, but for foot placement maybe make custom pedals that are same distance as what he normally places his feet at, I dunno a lot about animal training though
....and don't go holding your breath for that book XD

Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but powerful. Who are we to have the power to shape anything we wish? To hope, to dream? To be anything we can, to be free of everything that stops us. Can't? won't? impossible? these words do not exist....
:iconleafsong:
Judging by the last picture he looks more interested in taking a chunk out of the bike rather then riding it ;p

hmm... teach a bird to ride a bike? I don't know how to do that, the only birds I had were budgies and my brother's budgie "Boxer" killed them... seriously it hanged one of them and I don't know how, oh wait that's sad... I'm sorry I'm not going to be of any help with this ><

A single blossoming bud, a tear drop from blood and then it'll all come down to who you are.
:iconmooing-duckerberry:
First of all, it's amazing that you've taught him that many tricks already. I've had rats who couldn't do so much. Anyway, his legs are probably a bit short to comfortably reach over the seat, so that might be an issue, then again it might not be. If you tried taping longer sticks to the pedals it might help, just to give him more space on which to perch until he gets the idea.

Think logic - Feel emotion - Speak balance.
:iconfaeofdoom:
all I can think of is maybe showing him those videos of the other birds doing it?

it may not be much help...I get the feeling it won't be...but it probably wouldn't hurt to try.

My family

:iconolivianumber1fan:- little sister. She hardly draws, which is a shame. But we love her very much because she brings warmth in every smile!
:iconuniquelegend:-older sister, she's been my inspiration since I was little. She's been both a best friend and bully. But she and I share very special memories. :)
:iconp-mosquera:- older brother. He's what started me and my older sister to draw. He's addicted to WoW, and is the typical video gamer nerd. But no one could ask for a better brother. :glomp:
