I read a story once about a lady who responded "lol" to her friend who's mother had just died. She thought it meant "lots of love."

lol used to stand for "laugh out loud" in my eyes, but now to me it just stands for "I don't know what to say/can't be bothered saying anything else".

But when I was a kid it was "lots of love". XD

I use it for "laugh out loud" at the most.

But I see it as lots of love, and I use it when something or a situation is awkward

Recently, I've found that it also means "little old lady" according to my grandma.

to me "lol" is just a space-filler or is said to end a conversation or is used when one doesn't know what else to say...

"Laugh out loud"... or just a filler to use at the end of a convo when I or the other person has no response... or, when I am not laughing, I'll use it merely to show that I am not being serious/stern.
